TheproblemthatmostnecessitatedtherestorationoftheStatueofLibertywasgalvaniccorrosionoftheironarmatureincontactwiththecopperskin.Galvaniccorrosionoccurswhendissimilarmetalsareinelectricalcontactinthesameelectrolyte.Thedifferenceinelectrochemicalpotentialbetweenthedissimilarmetals(ironandcopper)isthedrivingforceforelectrolysis,wherebythearmature,forminghorizontalanodesatanacceleratedrate.Theironarmature,forminghorizontalandverticalribsagainstthecopperskin,andtheattachmentmechanism,wherebycoppersaddles(whichareflushrivetedtothecopperskin)surroundtheironarmature,providedaconfigurationconducivetogalvaniccorrosion.
Sincealloftheironarmaturewasinterconnected,onlyonelocationofphysicalcontacttothecopperskinwasnecessarytoprovideelectricalcontinuitytothecopperthroughouttheStatue.ThedesignersoftheStatuehadtriedtopreventthisgalvaniccouplingbyinsulatingthetwomaterialswithasbestosclothssoakedinshellac.Thiswasonlyatemporarybarrierthatbecameporouswithageandprovidedelectrolyticcontinuitybywickingandcapillaryaction.(reference)
