1814年9月13日凌晨，弗朗西斯·斯科特·基透过炮火的硝烟，看到一面美国国旗仍然在城堡上迎风飘扬，他被这景像深深感动，随手在一封信的背后写下了几行诗。
后来，他把诗稿送给法官尼科尔逊（Nicholson），得到大力赞赏，并建议用一首当时非常流行的曲子John Stafford Smith作曲的“To Anacreon in Heaven”做为配曲。
同时取歌名为“星条旗之歌”（The Star-Spangled Banner），这首歌深受美国人民的喜爱，很快就传遍全国。1931年，美国国会正式将《星光灿烂的旗帜》定为美国国歌。
