Speech-Environment
A very good morning I bid to the Principal, Mr.Yeoh , GPK 1, Mr. Lim , teachers and my fellow peers. Today, I will be giving a short speech on the importance and the ways to conserve our environment, in conjunction with the oncoming World Environment Day, which is only a week away.
Before starting off, I would like to grab this opportunity to thank the school for offering me this opportunity to enlighten all of you on this vital topic. As the president of the Friends of the Environment Club, I also faithfully believe that this is one of my obligations as well.
OK. My fellow friends, why do you think that it is crucial to conserve our environment? The answer to this question is very simple, which is because we, as human beings, have only one chance to do this. If we screw it up, God will not award us with a second chance. It is pure bliss to have a clean environment given to us, a godsend! Just picture yourself in the vast future, with your grandchildren all around you. The air tastes of ashes, the distant view is blurred by thick dust and clouds of smoke wafting through the air. Is this the future we have in store for our future generations?
To conserve and preserve the planet, we must not abuse it. We should not chop down forest without details planning. These lands which are covered with old gigantic trees are treasures to us. Forest not only serve as water catchment areas and a source of economy through logging but also habitats for a plethora of species of flora and fauna. Moreover, the uncontrolled cutting down of vast areas of forest contributes to soil erosion, landslides and floods, which translates to devastation to both humans and animals living in the forest. Mankind should always practice sustainable development to ensure the balance of the ecosystem is not tampered with.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and scientists throughout the globe have also concluded that human technologies have had a negative impact on the environment. The release of chlorofluorocarbon(CFC) which is a corrosive gas commonly used in the manufacture of aerosol cans and cooling machines has caused the ozone layer to deplete, forming a massive ozone hole above the Antarctica. This disappearing ozone contributes to global warming. Hence, we must try to reduce the usage of CFC-containing products as well as not let technological advances be the cause of pollution.
Besides, air and water pollution are now gradually becoming more and more serious issues on the Earth, including Malaysia. For example, the pollution of Sungai Gombak and Sungai Klang has worried all Malaysian. Industrial pollution caused by toxic waste being released into river streams is also destroying the environment. Toxic waste contaminates rivers, seas, and our water supply and moreover, it endangers aquatic life. Indirectly, when humans consume fishes which are intoxicated, our life lies on the line as well.
In conclusion, I urge all of you to take part actively in the oncoming World Environment Day and contribute yourselves to this holy cause. Prevention is better than cure. I also hope that all of you will disseminate this piece of information to all of your acquaintances, so that our world will be a better place to live in.
Thank you.
