一、词义不同
1、on the earth指在地球上。
2、on earth 指“当今”或“世界上”；还可以指“到底”或“究竟”。
3、in world 指世界。
4、in the world 指在世界上；到底。
二、用法不同
1、on the earth用于指“在地球上”，是介词短语，用于表示地点，即在地球上。例如：
We live on the earth．
我们生活在地球上。
There are millions of living things on the earth.
世界上有数以百万计的生物。
2、on earth 用于指“当今”或“世界上”，通常用于最高级之后，以加强语气。用于否定词之后，指“一点儿也不”，以加强否定的语气。例如：
He said，“I'm the happiest man on earth．”
他说：“我是世界上最幸福的人。”
It's no use on earth．
这一点儿也没有用。
3、in world 指世界上，通常后接名词，构成 in world+名词结构，意思是全球的，如：
In world markets trade barriers, not the lack of them, have exacerbated the mess.
在全球市场上，是贸易壁垒而不是没有贸易壁垒加剧了粮食危机。
4、in the world 指世界上，世界水平的，可用于最高级之后，以加强语气。如:
We reckon him to be the best goalkeeper in the world.
我们认为他是世界上最好的足球守门员。
三、用于加强语气不同
1、on earth用作“到底”或“究竟”，在 what，when等疑问词之后，以加强问句的语气。例如：
What on earth is it？
这到底是什么东西？
Why on earth did you tell a lie？
你究竟为什么要说谎？
2、 on the earth 仅表示在地球上，不能用于表示“究竟”。
If it were not for oxygen and nitrogen in the air, no man could live on the earth.
大气中如果没有氧和氮，人就无法生存于地球了。
3、in the world 还可以用于指“究竟、到底”，用于what，when，where等疑问词之后。如：
What in the world is he doing?
他究竟在干什么？
4、in world ，指在世界上，不能用于指“究竟、到底”。
