Individual Contributor
It means someone who contributes individually. Their main purpose is not management. The idea behind this is to recognize that there is a career path for people who have technical skills that doesn't go through the path of becoming a manager.
Many places have a top tier of ICs which they will call "Fellow" or "Principal Engineer" or something like that with a pay grade equivalent to a director/vp/GM/or other high level manager.
