ThefirstApplelogowasdesignedbyRonWayne,co-founderofAppleComputer.Itwasratherapicturethanalogo.ItshowedSirIsaacNewtonsittingbeneaththefamousAppletreethinkingaboutgravity.
ItwasonlyusedfortheAppleI.SteveJobsfeltthatitwastoointellectualanditwasalmostimpossibletoputoncomputersasonecouldonlyrecognizethedetailsofthedrawingwhenitwaslargeenough.
Therefore,in1977JobsaskedtheartdesignerRobJanofftodesignthenewApplelogo.ThenewlogohadasimpleshapeofanApple,bitteninto,withthecolorsoftherainbowinthewrongorder.Thebitesymbolizedknowlegde(inthebibletheapplewasthefruitofthetreeofknowledge)andthebitecouldalsobepronounced"byte",areferencetocomputertechnology.
WhenJeanLouisGasséewasaskedabouthisthoughtstotheApplelogoheanswered:"Oneofthedeepmysteriestomeisourlogo,thesymboloflustandknowledge,bitteninto,allcrossedwiththecolorsoftherainbowinthewrongorder.Youcouldn'tdreamofamoreappropriatelogo:lust,knowledge,hope,andanarchy."
In1997,SteveJobsdecidedtodropthemulti-coloredApplelogoandreplaceitbyasolid-coloredlogo.ThefirstApplecomputerstofeaturethenewlogowerethenewPowerBookG3sin1998(althoughtheystillfeaturedbothtypesoflogos).
