Usinganimportantpartoftheclassicstory,"JourneytotheWest",thedirectorattemptedtoretellthestoryofhowtheMonkeygod(SunWuKong)wastamedandwillinglyescortedtheLongevityMonkonajourneytoIndia(West)toreceivethesacredbuddhistscriptures.Intheoriginaltext,MonkeywascapturedbythegreatlordBuddhaandentrapedunderthe"5FingersMountain"(HandofBuddha)for500yearswherehewastamedandthensavedbytheLongevityMonk.
Inthemovieadaption,hewasappointedtheprotectoroftheLongevityMonkbutstrayedfromthepathofholinesswhenhefellinlovewithademonessandtriedtosellouthismaster(thedemonsbelievedbyeatinghisflesh,theywouldgainimmortality).Monkeywaseventuallycapturedandwastobedestroyedwhenhismasterintervened,beggingforhisdisciple'smercyandsacrificinghimselftosavehisdisciple.TheGoddessofMercythendecidedtosendtheMonkey500yearsforwardintimetolivealifeofsufferingsasamortalbeforepassingjudgement.
Thestorycomesin2partsandhastobewatchedtogethertobefullyunderstood(the1stparthadquiteacliffhangergoingon).Whilegreatperformancesweretobeexpectedfromeverycastinvolved,StephenChowstoodoutastheMonkeyGod.Asamortalheattemptedtoresisthisfateandchangehisfuture,asanimmortalhetriedtoforgethismortallongingsandfocusonhismission.StephenChow'sportrayalofthestruggleandgrowthofthecharacterwassimplyexcellent.
